Biography

One of the precursors of the axé music, Gerônimo found his niche in the exoticism that mixes Caribbean influences with the percussive vigor and sensuality of the music of Bahia. Some of his successes are "Oxossi" (included on the soundtrack of the film Wild Orchard), "Jubiabá," and "Menino do Pelô." In his early years, Gerônimo played horns in the Filarmônica de Bom Jesus dos Pobres and percussion in the Trio Elétrico de Dodô e Osmar, having also toured Europe in the '70s with the Balé Brasileiro da Bahia. Having recorded an LP in that period (which hadn't happened), his songs knew a broader success in the interpretation of other artists like A Cor do Som ("Dentro da Minha Cabeça") and Diana Pequeno ("Mensageiro da Alegria"). In the '80s, he enjoyed nationwide recognition after his "É D'Oxum" was included on the soundtrack of TV Globo's series Tenda dos Milagres. His biggest hit was "Eu Sou Negão," a success of the Carnival of 1987. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
