Cantatille “La Musette”: V. Air. ...

Biography

Lemaire was a student of Sebastien de Brossard who was the organist at Meaux Cathedral. Becoming a noted vocal composer in Paris he was already published in 1712 by Ballard: notably a volume of airs. It is thought that Lemaire composed eight separate volumes of airs but only six are extant. "Les quatre saisons" (the four seaons) was published in 1724 which was a compilation of four cantatas Lemaire wrote; but, his favorite genre was the French cantatille (a French Rococo version of the French Baroque cantata). Most of these compositions were set for high voices with violin and flute accompaniment and an occasional musette or vielle. Lemaire contributed over sixty cantatilles during the height of their popularity and his works were included in numerous anthologies and concerts. Lemaire also composed two volumes of motets. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
