Popov, a Russian composer and pianist was educated at the Leningrad Conservatory. The bulk of his work is orchestral, and his symphonies are on the epic scale of Borodin. This dramatic monumental quality is also a characteristic of his many choral works. He drew upon Russian and Spanish folk music for inspiration.
