PHENO (pronounced fee-no) is Australian electric guitarist and vocalist Jess Green’s pseudonym. As Pheno, she is pioneers her own style of Art-Pop, influenced by artists such as Tune-Yards and St Vincent with a huge nod to 80’s heroes David Bowie and Talking Heads. Pheno’s music layers shimmering vocals, scorching electric guitars, synthesisers, and backbeats. Lyrical material ranges from Sci-Fi musings in utero (There Are Voices Out There') to ethereal callings from the deep ('Shadow in The Water'). The band is a dream team, Jess has collaborated with Bree van Reyk (Holly Throsby/Paul Kelly/Sally Seltman) and synths / vocalist Alyx Dennison (Kyu) as well as other special guests. The album is bold and energetic, ranging from moods reminiscent of the Stranger Things soundtrack to the fuzzy, lush indie pop of The Shins. Part funded by a successful Pozible campaign in 2016 and recorded by David Trumpmanis (Sarah Blasko/Flume) the EP production is lush and detailed. The EP was launched at Sydney’s Leadbelly as part of the VIVID festival. Pheno tours as a solo act using loops, electric guitar, synths and a drum machine and has performed in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney & Canberra. Pheno has shared the stage with Merpire, Georgia Fields, Matilda Abraham and Bonniesongs, and has opened for Odette, Moaning Lisa, US indie Icon Joan as Policewoman and Canadian Stars The New Pornographers.
