Biography

Polish conductor Jacek Kaspszyk attended the Warsaw Academy of Music, and following graduation in 1975, he made his debut at the Polish National Opera, conducting Mozart's Don Giovanni. In 1976, he became the principal guest conductor at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and in 1978, he appeared for the first time with the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. By 1980, he was named the principal conductor and music director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. A move to London in 1982 brought him into contact with a number of ensembles, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hallé, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and other orchestras in the United Kingdom. Since then, Kaspszyk has conducted major orchestras around the world, including Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Germany, France, Austria, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands, as well as orchestras in the United States and Canada. In 1998, Kaspszyk was appointed artistic director and music director of the Polish National Opera, and became managing director in 2000. Kaspszyk has conducted opera productions for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Opéra Comique in Paris, Opéra National de Bordeaux, Opéra de Lyon, the Stockholm Opera, the English National Opera, the Scottish Opera, the Zurich Opera, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, among other companies. He became artistic director of the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, and was again appointed music director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2009. He also began his association with the Martha Argerich Project at the Lugano Festival. In September 2013, he became the music director and artistic director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, and led the orchestra's first Internet broadcasts. For the 2016-2017 season, Kaspszyk took the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra on tour in the United States, and conducted performances with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of India.
