Biography

Also known as La Fonky or la FF, the Fonky Family was a French hip-hop crew that hailed from Marseille. The group emerged in 1994 and made their first appearance on wax on the 1995 Akhenaton (debut) solo album. 1997 would see the Fonky Family make a full-length debut of their own with the album Si Dieu Veut. The album sold quite well, it went gold, in fact, but that was tempered by the departure of founding member Karima soon after. While it would be a while before la FF would hit the French charts again, they were hardly quiet. Two live EPs were released in 1999 and 2000, as well as making a number of appearances with other French hip-hop giants. Art de Rue, Fonky Family's second album finally hit stores in 2001. The group took a break after the sophomore release, to focus mainly on solo work, but reconvened in 2006 for their third long-player release, Marginal Musique. The album reflected the French record buying public's hankering for a little la FF, as it debuted on the charts at number one. ~ Chris True, Rovi
