b. 16 June 1966. Rapper JC001 boasts one of the world’s most fearsome, animated rap deliveries. His maniacal rants adorn a mixed hip-hop/ragga backing, with samples lifted from classic Jamaican fare (Dave And Ansell Collins’ ‘Double Barrel’ on the ‘Cupid’ 45, etc). Born of part Indian/Catholic parentage, he first listened to ragga rhymes on David Rodigan’s Roots Rockers radio programme, but he bought into rap with the advent of electro and ‘Planet Rock’. After performing at blues parties and carnivals he joined the pirate radio stations. His first record emerged in 1987, ‘I Diss Therefore I Am’, built on the Ethiopians’ ‘Train To Skaville’, before collaborating with others for ‘Bad Place To Get Hit’. Though his press image is one of devilish intensity and spite, his lyrics trace strong anti-racism sentiments. He collaborated with the Beatmasters on their 1991 comeback single, ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams’.
