Roland Weihmayer (aka Y-my-R), created this project in the late 1990s as an escape from over-exposure to Grunge-Rock, that had taken over the Heavy Metal scene and had a devastating effect on the development of his favorite music genre at the time: Progressive Metal. Until then, Roland aspired to match his personal guitar-heroes in speed, dexterity and expression, and was honing his skills in various local bands, hoping for a break-through. The rise of leagues of Grunge-Rock bands, who seemed to celebrate their lack of dedication to their instruments, demonstrated to the world, that skill and success are in no way correlated. Hours of daily guitar-practice sessions now somehow felt moot. As a result, Roland’s relationship with the electric guitar soured, and he stopped playing entirely. He would not pick up the guitar again for another 5 years. Around this time, Depeche Mode released their “Ultra” album, reminding Roland that guitars are not at all necessary, and that a catchy melody line counts more than one’s ability to “shred.” Y-my-R is the result of this realization. It’s a guitar player recalling the piano lessons of his childhood, and the convenient observation that a computer soundcard purchased to record guitar riffs, can also be used to make bleepy Synthpop sounds. Guitars have found their way back into some of Y-my-R's newer recordings, but the philosophy behind the project stays unchanged: These songs are made for listening, not as a way to show off.
