Biography

Michael Varekamp (1968, Rotterdam) is a Netherlands based trumpetplayer, vocalist, composer and producer with roots in Trinidad & Tobago. Just a kid, Michael fell in love with the music of Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. Ten years later he graduated cum laude at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague under the wings of legendary trumpet master Ack van Rooyen. As a member of the Surinam jazz group Fra fra Sound he starts travelling around the world in his early twenties. He played in venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center New York, Barbican Centre London and Gran Teatro de la Habana in Cuba. In his career of 30+ years he performed with a variety of musicians such as David Murray, Branford Marsalis, Lester Bowie and Toumani Diabaté. He toured all over Europe as a member of Sonny Fortune quintet. He also writes for movies and theatre productions. Michael won several awards in projects and as a soloist. He was awarded with the Kobe Award in Japan and received an Edison(Dutch Grammy) and Gouden Kalf (Dutch Oscar). He is co-director of The Legends and just started his new group Narrative.
