Youfield is an artist that wants to suggest that the idea of the artist over the last few hundred years may have got out of hand. To look “behind” the work, for the cause of the work is understandably a “natural attitude”. Youfield invites the listener to also be the creator, to invent the open moment of listening. For Youfield these works have appeared. There is nothing “behind” the work that reveals the creative moment of the work in its appearance. “Oh, those Greeks! They knew how to live. What is required for that is to stop courageously at the surface, ...to adore appearance, to believe in forms, tones, words, in the whole Olympus of appearance. Those Greeks were superficial-out of profundity.”
