More Than You Know

Biography

Although not well known nationally, Maggie Galloway is an expressive vocalist who has acquired a small following singing jazz around Boston in the 1980s and 1990s. Galloway, whose influences include Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson, was born in Flint, MI and grew up in nearby Flushing. The singer was first exposed to jazz in 1976, when she was an 18-year-old music student at the University of Michigan. In 1979, she moved to Boston to attend the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, and in 1981, Downbeat Magazine gave Galloway its DeeBee Award for best student vocalist. Along the way, she sang with various pop and rock units (including the Boston rock band Pleasure Pointe) and with Boston's fusion-oriented Nightrunners; but eventually, she made straight-ahead jazz and standards her main focus. Galloway has often paid the bills with various "day gigs"; the 1990s found her working part-time for a high-tech PR firm during the day and singing in jazz clubs at night. In 1998, Brownstone released Galloway's first CD, More Than You Know, which consisted of sessions she'd done in 1995 and 1997. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
