Biography

“Transparent, moving, and powerful,” Chris Harford describes playing with Band of Changes as like being in the ocean. The singer/songwriter started the band in the early 1990s, melding rock, bluegrass, and folk influences and bringing together an extended community of musicians who have held membership in the band throughout the years. Each performance has a different lineup; the band’s legacy of members includes Mickey Melchiondo, Aaron Freeman, Dave Dreiwitz, and Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween, Joe Russo and Scott Metzger of Joe Russo's Almost Dead, David Mansfield, Eric Slick, and many others. Chris Harford and the Band of Changes shows take the energy of the room and turn it into sound. Through Sing, Breathe, and Be Merry, released in 2002, and Time Warp Deck, released in 2004, the band preserves several iterations of itself. Harford’s lyrics and delivery are in equal parts energetic and introspective, described by NPR as both “beautiful, heart-rending and soulful” and “dark, rocking, and dangerous.” Like the fluid atmosphere of a live performance, the recorded songs of Chris Harford and the Band of Changes create a diverse emotional landscape that offers something different every time you listen. They reveal an important truth – that the only constant is change itself.
