French-British producer Joni Void got their start making tracks in their bedroom as a teenager in Northern France under the moniker Johnny Ripper, gaining a significant following on Soundcloud. Emigrating to Montréal a decade ago, Void became a central member of the collective at pivotal DIY venue La Plante, and began releasing albums on experimental label Constellation in 2017. Void’s plunderphonic electronica incorporates field recordings captured on Walkman cassette, home recording sessions featuring a diverse cast of local musicians, occasional file-sharing contributions by artists further afield, and samples of songs from a wide array of avant/indie signposts. Influenced by musique concrète, foley and film sound editing, Void makes rhythmic sound collage works that document community and have been celebrated for their implicit cultural commentary and diaristic emotional resonance. Among other accolades, albums Selfless (2017) and Mise En Abyme (2019) garnered 7.7 and 8.0 ratings from Pitchfork. Every Day Is The Song (2023) marked a transition from twitchy kineticism towards a warmer, looser, more exploratory sound, culminating in Every Life Is A Light (2025), Void’s most poignant and inviting album to date, featuring contributions from Sook-Yin Lee, Ytamo, Haco, and Pink Navel among others. Void remains highly active as a local DIY promoter in Montréal, organizing dozens of shows a year, and occasionally issuing recordings, under their Everyday Ago banner.
