Biography

NOMINATED for THE AGE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARD for BEST JAZZ ALBUM - 2018 & 2013 One of Australia’s finest jazz/art music saxophonists and composers, Adam Simmons is known for stretching the boundaries of modern jazz composition and performance, infusing a sense of wonder and playfulness into musical art forms better known for their gravitas. With Origami, his alto saxophone is perfectly complemented by virtuoso bandmate Howard Cairns’ gentle strength on double bass and Hugh Harvey’s exuberant drumming style. Hailed as one of Simmons’ strongest projects, the trio formed in 2010 and has wowed at festivals ever since. Origami’s sold-out concert at 2019 Stonnington Jazz Festival with special guest Wang Zheng-Ting was described by Australian Book Review as “the standout performance” of the Festival. In 2020, Origami will be touring to China, Europe, Turkey and India. “… Adam Simmons is producing some of the most incredible jazz in Australia or anywhere else.” - Raphael Solarsh, Arts Hub “With any offering inspired by Adam Simmons there is going to be more than merely music… - Roger Mitchell, Ausjazz.net “… arguably the standout performance of the Festival… This was music of dreams, full of space and ethereal sounds, magisterial, that floated and danced in a darkened room, lit only by Jean Poole’s dramatic video projections that served to heighten and intensify the experience.” - Des Cowley, Australian Book Review – review of performance of Wu-Xing at 2019 Stonnington Jazz
