Biography

Iration Steppas are a Leeds institution, active since the early 90s as a sound system and production unit composed of Mark Iration and Dennis Rootical. The pair first met in 1993 at a time when sound system culture and music in the UK was changing, from the militant vibrations of Jah Shaka towards a broader future that would encompass not only the roots of the music but also new interpretations. Iration’s production style is easily recognisable by it's orchestral melodies, heavy bass and stepping drumlines, nicknamed 'Dub inna year 3000 style' in reference to its ability to straddle both the past and the future. The dub-making-duo started off their careers heavily experimenting with new sounds, blending dub with acid soundscapes in a way that had never been done before. Simultaneously, Mark and Dennis started releasing music with their trip-hop and house alias Kitachi. Scud Missile (Remix) (1994) Kilimanjaro (1995) and Reminiscence (1996) are considered genre defining UK dub classics, granting Iration the title of Vanguard of Dub. As for the Iration Steppas sound system itself, it remains one of the world's best loved, a super-charged wall of sound that continues to bring to life generation after generation of dub and bass enthusiasts.
