Biography

Australian band Sidewinder was formed in Canberra in 1990 by Nick Craft (lead vocals and guitar), his brother Martin Craft (bass), Pip Branson (guitar), and Giri Fox (drums). One of a crop of new Australian bands playing alternative guitar pop at this time, Sidewinder never achieved the success of their contemporaries Pollyanna, Jebediah, or Something for Kate. Sidewinder released a number of EPs in the mid-'90s, including the T-Star EP and the Yoko Icepick EP in 1993, and the Gentle Art of Spoonbending EP in 1995. The band's debut album, Atlantis, appeared later in 1995 and produced a couple of minor singles. The follow-up, Tangerine, released in 1997, was more of a success, producing the hit "Titanic Days." This song, plus "Not Coming Home" from Atlantis, was featured in the soundtrack to the Australian film Blackrock. In 1999, Sidewinder found themselves without a record deal after the merger of Mercury/Polygram with Universal Music. They disbanded in 2000. ~ Jonathan Lewis, Rovi
