Keith Rankin's solo recordings as Giant Claw are as unpredictable as their eye-catching visual artwork. Since debuting in 2010, the project's numerous releases have ranged from mutated prog and psychedelia (2012's Mutant Glamour) to footwork and vaporwave (2014's Dark Web) to dense neo-classical collages (2021's Mirror Guide). Rankin co-runs the eclectic, highly productive Orange Milk Records label, providing artwork for many of the label's releases, and has also received acclaim for his work as part of the prolific group Death's Dynamic Shroud. The Ohio-based artist began releasing music as Giant Claw in 2010, the same year he co-founded Orange Milk. Following several tapes and CD-Rs the project made its vinyl debut in 2012 with Haunted Planet (Wool Recordings) and Mutant Glamour (Orange Milk). In stark contrast to these warped, playful Krautrock-esque releases, Rankin displayed his darker, cinematic side on 2013's Music for Film, issued by Constellation Tatsu. The 2014 full-length Dark Web was a postmodern collision of footwork and contemporary R&B, and was followed by the MIDI symphony Deep Thoughts and Giant Claw vs. Guerilla Toss, Rankin's reworking of five songs by the New York-based punk-funk collective, issued by DFA in 2016. The fragmentary yet spacious Soft Channel was released by Orange Milk in 2017, while the virtual cello concerto Mirror Guide and the free-pop Faith in Persona (as Death's Dynamic Shroud) were released in 2021. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
