Biography

Conductor and singer Giuseppe Maletto has led performances of music from the early Renaissance to Bach. He has recorded for Glossa and other labels and has collaborated as a singer with leading early music groups. Maletto was drawn into early music as a teen when he heard the pioneering recordings of Guillaume Dufay's music by ensemble director David Munrow. He even ordered scores for the performing edition of Dufay's music, although the music of the early Renaissance was only sparsely performed at the time in Italy. Maletto began his career as a singer, focusing on the music of Monteverdi forward into the Baroque era, but he remained interested in earlier music and also learned medieval repertory. In the 1990s, there was no early music group in Italy that specialized in the music of the 15th century and specifically in that of Dufay. In 1995, Maletto and Svetlana Fomina founded the group Cantica Symphonia to address this lack; Maletto remains the group's director. The recordings of Cantica Symphonia, released on Glossa and other labels, take innovative approaches to the music of Dufay and other 15th century composers, avoiding the homogeneous textures of 16th century music in favor of singing that defines the individual vocal lines and also exploring the philosophical ramifications of the music. Maletto has also collaborated as a singer with top early music groups, including Hespèrion XXI, La Petite Bande, and Concerto Italiano. He has participated in more than 40 albums, several of which have won top European recording industry awards, and has performed on concert tours around Europe, Israel, Japan, and the Americas. In 2020, he led Cantica Symphonia on a Glossa album featuring Josquin's Stabat mater. He returned in 2023 on the Aparte label, leading the ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro on a recording of the Sacrae Cantiones of Don Carlo Gesualdo. ~ James Manheim, Rovi
