Biography

British soprano Sarah Tynan is noted for her operatic roles and concert performances, which are concentrated in Baroque, Classical, and contemporary music. She attended the Royal Northern College of Music and continued her studies the Royal Academy of Music, where she received the Queen's Commendation for Excellence. She joined the young singers program at the English National Opera and was a principal with the company until 2007. Notable roles she has performed include Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare, Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Sophie in Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier. Admired for her acting skills, she has worked with directors David Alden, Phyllida Lloyd, David McVicar, Katie Mitchell, and Jonathan Miller. She has performed with leading conductors, among them Andrew Davis, Richard Hickox, Andrew Litton, Paul McCreesh, Lorin Maazel, Roger Norrington, Gianandrea Noseda, Christophe Rousset, and Jaap van Zweden. In modern repertoire, Tynan has sung in Dallapiccola’s Partita, Unsuk Chin's Kala, James MacMillan's The Sacrifice, Henze’s Boulevard Solitude, and Harrison Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy.
