Biography

Describing his sound as the "avant garde of rap", Zen Gnarly is one of the more unconventional emcees to pop up on the east coast. Born in the city of Westbury, New York to Haitian immigrants, he would soon move to Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he spent much of his childhood and early adulthood. He found a safe place in music, particularly with hip-hop, and soon found himself immersed with legends like Mos Def in addition to other creative forces such as Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. By the time the digital age of creativity led him to new inspiration like Lucki, Curren$y, and Babyface Ray, Zen had begun to delve into the world of cryptocurrency and decentralized networking. As he sought out music as his own creative outlet, he became obsessed with bringing this ideology to the forefront of hip-hop culture. Utilizing disarrange melodies, unconventional arrangements, and evocative vocal performances, he has managed to create pieces of art that are like no other within the music industry. Taking cues from the game-changing rappers of our era, Zen seeks to carve out his own path without conforming to the uniform sound of modern rap music. It harkens back to the concept of decentralization, a thread in his lyrics and brand that he strongly pushes. "I rap in a cryptic code of languages that my listeners can crack to find their own unique sense of freedom within my music." At twenty-six years old, Zen certainly has a clearer sense of purpose than most emcees.
