Biography

Paolo Beschi is the lead cellist in the eminent Italian Baroque period-instrument ensemble Il Giardino Armonico. Beschi studied the cello in his native Brescia before deciding to learn the techniques unique to the Baroque cello. Beschi teaches cello in Como, Italy, and also plays in a Baroque trio called La Gaia Scienza. On his own, Beschi has recorded the cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach for the Winter & Winter label, a recording that has been acclaimed by some as being among the best of these works ever made, although some others feel that it is among the worst. Nonetheless, this should give you some idea of Beschi's approach to the cello -- passionate, aggressive, energetic, and intense.
