Hark! Hark! the Lark: Music for Shakes...

Biography

In 1584 John Hilton was a countertenor for Lincoln Cathedral and by 1593 he had acceded to the position of supervising the choristers. The next year Hilton became the organist at Trinity College in Cambridge. The music ascribed to John Hilton The Elder is usually thought to be attributable to him; however, some compositions may be those of his son John Hilton and clear distinctions are not typical. The majority of music composed by John Hilton was written for the church service with only a few madrigalian exceptions. A "Te Deum" is clearly distingished as that of John Hilton The Elder. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
