Orpheus with His Lute: Music for Shake...

Biography

Leveridge's compositions were primarily written for the popular theatre and included a number of books of songs, friendly drinking songs, light aria-like pieces performed between acts at the theatre, and songs performed after theatrical performances (a new form of music dubbed the `after-piece'.) Popular because of his strong voice -- quite flexible during the years that Purcell was able to compose for him -- Leveridge was a leading figure on the London stage throughout his life. Though he had some years in which numerous parts did not come his way, Leveridge nevertheless retained a public following not only for the quality of his voice but also because of his annual benefit concerts and honesty. He performed a number of different parts in an unprecedented excess of fifty times. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
