Jacam Manricks is a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, recording artist, and producer who lives in California. Manricks hails from a distinguished musical family with global reach. His parents played in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia and his grandparents in Sri Lanka. Jacám grew up attending his parents’ concerts and delving into their extensive jazz record collection. After earning a degree in classical and jazz saxophone, Manricks moved to New York and went on to earn a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Arts from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in 2007. He combined both his love of cutting-edge jazz and classical music on 2009’s Labyrinth, a critically hailed project of Manricks’ originals that featured his settings for a chamber orchestra and a state-of-the-art quintet with guitarist Ben Monder, pianist Jacob Sacks, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Manricks followed up with 2010’s Trigonometry, another stellar set of originals with pianist Gary Versace, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Obed Calvaire, and 2012’s Cloud Nine, with guitarist Adam Rogers, drummer Matt Wilson, and organist Sam Yahel. His next superb release on MMR in 2016, Chamber Jazz, featured pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Gianluca Renzi, and drummer Ari Hoenig. After a duo release GilManricks and an electronic-infused trio release Music Shop, Manricks’ latest milestone Samadhi (for 2020 release), is the snapshot of an inveterately creative musical mind.
