Sam spent his early years living in North America with his mother and sister. It wasn't until he was refused entry back into the United States following a summer trip to see his father in Portugal that his life took a dramatic change. For a 13-year-old the new world in which he found himself, along with the emotional and physical separation from his family was a traumatic experience. A new country, new school and despite many new friends Sam struggled to rationalise his feelings.
