From father to son, Gary Muponda, now popularly known as Gary Tight, Tight a stage name inherited from his father Willom Tight. Muponda is from Honde Valley, Mutare. Born on 2 December 1994, Gary started singing at the age of two. Born in a musical family, his musical career started at Sunday school and with the encouragement of his father the road seemed cut that he would take music as a career if he decided. In church he was mentored by Dr Apostle Manjovha “grandfather” who has been supported Gary throughout his music life offering support in terms of allowances that allowed Gary to attend rehearsals and studio rehearsal bookings. Growing up listening to Glen Washington, R. Kelly it is a surprise that these two have not quite influenced his music, rather Sam Mtukudzi’s influence is highly evident. Having been introduced to Sam’s music by his father, Gary fell in love instantly and was inspired by Sam’s music. He sings Sam’s music like he owns it. This is a beginning. No doubt Gary is trying to find his feet and as many may argue, he is also trying to find his authentic voice. For a person who was embarrassed to admit to his school mates that he was a musician when he was in form one, Gary has come a long way, having held his first ever show at 10 years of age at the Artists Against Poverty Festival Campaign in 2005.
