From songs of protest to songs of praise - it has never been unclear to me the power that music has. Hip-Hop culture especially has prided itself on having something important to say. Prided itself on shining a light onto the injustice and inequality that pervades our past and present. The amount of information you can pack into one song; the energy, emotion and experience that can be embedded into a few minutes - these are the reasons I believe Hip-Hop is uniquely positioned to have a huge impact on our collective consciousness in the current climate. Since I was a child I can remember always being stuck with this feeling of inner discord. This feeling that something was amiss in the world around me. As I've learned more and more about our history as people, and the system that currently occupies us this one thing has become abundantly clear: We have been asleep for too long.
