John Thayer is a New York-based musician and audio engineer whose experiential compositions are inspired by a deep attention to the sounds of the natural world. His recordings, centered around a hybrid of studio techniques and improvisatory performance, range from long-form, multilayered ambience to polyrhythmic electro-acoustic collage. His latest solo LP is Supermundane, released in 2021 on Moon Villain Records. Thayer's debut solo album Regarding Wave appeared on Surfacing Records in 2018. A year later Thayer released Currents I a long form sound installation for Brooklyn's Trestle Gallery. An in demand collaborator, Thayer released the ambient album Mountain Rumors with multi-instrumentalist Craig Schenker on Aural Canyon records in 2020. Further collaborations continued with synthesist Michael Hix on the album Semblance. An artist residency at the Montello Foundation in Nevada saw the creation and release of two LP's, Blue of Distance with singer songwriter Lea Thomas and Listening Sky a long form piece commissioned by the Southern Utah Museum of Art. Thayer with musician David Lackner founded the laptop-jazz project YAI . The duo released their debut album Flowers from Home on Not Not Fun Records in January of 2022. 2022 also saw the release of Earth Room an improv collaboration with musicians Ezra Feinberg & Robbie Lee and Excavation, the debut LP from Thayer and NYC Downtown legend Chris Cochrane, released on Astral Editions.
