Biography

Lenka Lichtenberg was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She spent her childhood years as a ‘child star’ in the immensely popular musical theatre Semafor. She studied classical music at the Prague Music Conservatory, specializing in voice. In Canada, she received Masters degree in Ethnomusicology at the York University. Lenka co-founded the Yiddish swing all-female group Sisters of Sheynville, a world-music group Fray and other ensembles. She has released seven solo albums and several collaborations. She has received multiple awards and nominations including two Canadian Folk Music Awards and Independent Music Awards. Lenka’s latest albums MASARYK (2017) and Yiddish Journey (2018) were released on the U.K. label ARC Music. Her latest project The Thieves of Dreams, a theatre / music production, was to be presented in 2020 by the Toronto Jazz Festival and the Washington Jewish Arts festival (JxJ 2020), events now postponed. In Toronto, Lenka leads a small female choir, co-leads Shabbat services at her congregation Darchei Noam, and is getting ready to publish an illustrated songbook of her new Yiddish compositions and arrangements (from my song garden to yours פֿון מײַן לידגאָרטן צו דײַנעם).
