Horn to Horn

Por Por: Honk Horn Music of Ghana

Biography

Comprised of a group of Ghanaian minibus (trotro) drivers from the La region of Accra, Ghana, the La Drivers Union Por Por Group officially formed in 1968. Por Por, for the uninitiated, is the traditional honk horn music played by trotro drivers throughout Ghana, a genre that wasn't very well known outside of Ghana until the early 2000s when musician Nii Noi Nortey managed to grab the attention of musicologist Steven Feld. Initially introduced to the La Drivers Union by his friend Nii Yemo Nunu in 2002, Nortey had gigged with the band at various trotro stations and hotels for a few years before introducing the group to Feld. The musicologist helped them record three tracks, which were released on The Time of Bells, Vol. 3: Musical Bells of Accra (a compilation released by VoxLox in 2005). Two years later, the La Drivers Union released their first full-length on Smithsonian Folkways, the aptly titled Por Por: Honk Horn Music of Ghana. It was a major debut for both the La Drivers Union and for Por Por itself. ~ TiVo Staff, Rovi
