Biography

Jeremy Young is a composer and improviser of concrète electronic tape music from Montreal, Quebec. He is a member of the electroacoustic modern classical trio Sontag Shogun, and the experimental poetry_sound unit Cloud Circuit alongside writer Deanna Radford. His work makes use of a sine and square wave oscillator system, analog 1/4" tape loops, captured and filtered radio and EMF signal, and foley-inspired sound treatments from amplified surfaces and objects. Young's improvisational and compositional techniques are influenced by Cagean aleatoricism as well as haptics-based praxis and deep listening. He has performed across Canada, the US, UK, Asia, and Europe, and has worked with artists. In 2020-21, Young's sound art work was selected to appear in Francisco López's kaleidoscopic audio exhibition, "AUDIOSFERA: Sound Experimentation 1980-2020," at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain. His forthcoming solo LP, Amaro, will be released in May 2021 on Thirsty Leaves Music, and features contributions from multidisciplinary artists Vito Ricci, Ida Toninato, Markus Floats, Pauline Kim Harris, Johannes Bergmark, Deanna Radford, Dolphin Midwives, and filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa.
