Biography

South Korea's Mogwaa produces a wide variety of music fit for a sunset party on a tropical beach, drawing from '80s boogie, house, and electro. Along with numerous floor-filling club singles, he's also released more chilled-out Balearic beat records like the 2022 mini-album Del Mar and 2023's Hazy Dreams. Seoul-based Seungyoung Lee, aka Mogwaa, made his debut with the quirky boogie-funk of 2017's Déjà Vu, released by American label Star Creature. The soundtrack-like mini-album 07307 appeared in 2018, and the reggae-influenced "Mi Male Curiosity" single was released by Redseal Records. On 2019's Till Dawn, Mogwaa paid tribute to influential R&B producer Kashif. The same year brought the EP Pilgrim and a 7" single with Andre Gibson. 2020 was a highly productive year for Lee. Days in the Hood appeared on Thai label More Rice, and Mogwaa N Jam, a 7" of slow jams with vocalist Xin Seha, was released by 8Balltown. Eu Li, an EP with Mr. Ho, drew from Brazilian funk carioca on opening track "Bail-E." The '80s R&B-style Open Mind and the more aquatic Turquoise also appeared during the year. Mogwaa's Balearic mini-LP Del Mar was released by MM Discos in 2022, followed by the more club-ready From Above EP, issued by Peggy Gou's Gudu Records. A Garden Inside appeared on Zen2000 at the end of the year. A house EP, Drifted, was released by Gudu in 2023, and the Balearic album Hazy Dreams followed on MM Discos. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
