Biography

Caleño (JP Tamayo) is a French-Colombian singer born in Paris. His parents are from Cali, Colombia, worldwide known as the capital of salsa, and Caleño lived there on several occasions. He began his musical career in Paris by singing in salsa orchestras. From 2011 to 2016, he lived in Barcelona, Bogotá, Cali, and New York, where he managed to perform concerts alongside renowned artists such as Bobby Allende and Eddie Montalvo, the conguero of Hector Lavoe, an iconic figure of Fania. Returning to Paris, he released two discs under the pseudonym Tamayo, including an EP in 2020 with Uprising Music, the label of the famous pianist Eddie Palmieri. Reintegrated into the Parisian Latin scene, he gradually began shaping a new project: merging the world of salsa with the urban music that has always and strongly influenced him. In 2023, Tamayo met the French-Colombian producer El Speaker. Together, they worked on a new repertoire inspired by the great classics of 1970s salsa, which they fused with modern and current urban productions. This enabled the salsero Tamayo to become Caleño and sing proficiently in salsa, trap, and reggaeton. With a 2024 marked by fiery showcases in Paris, Caleño confirms his stage experience and offers a rich, colorful, and powerful musical universe, that of a generation of Franco-Latinos proud of their roots, dancing to both the music their parents listened to and current urban sounds.
