'BLUE PERIOD' is the fourth full length album by Conrad Clifton, and solidifies his unique creative voice in electronic music. Since releasing 'Get Your Whole Life', Conrad took a four year hiatus, using the time for artistic soul-searching, and experimentation. The resulting cohesive collection of tunes are as otherworldly ("THERE'S ONLY ONE" and “zen the fk out”), as they are club ready ("I didn’t plan on falling in love tonight" and “we gon do it!!!”). However, Conrad is evolving - exploring different sounds and recording techniques. In addition to intricate electronic production, many of the tracks feature him playing organic instruments like the kalimba on “what u see” and “zen the fk out” - and the guitar on “BLUE PERIOD” and “The Ugly Truth”. Clifton has also embraced using real-time hardware effects throughout the album, giving it a more experimental unpredictable quality, and more warmth overall. The title ‘BLUE PERIOD’ is a nod to Pablo Picasso’s popular era of works, and a reference to how Conrad views music production as an art form. Also a fan of anime, Clifton was inspired by Tsubasa Yamaguchi’s Blue Period, which explores the misconception of hard work being viewed as talent - where some non-artistic individuals regard the “naturally talented” as having it easy - disregarding the artist's efforts, sacrifices and countless hours honing their craft. And as Gil Scott-Heron says in the quote at the end of “what u see”, there’s really something worthwhile here.
