Biography

Liz’s musical education began as a junior at the Royal Academy of Music and thereafter on a scholarship to study violin and piano at Trinity College of Music. Whilst at college, she co-founded the Court String Quartet in which she played for a number of years. After several years as a professional quartet player and then in ensembles at the BBC and the English National Opera, she took up the position of Sub-Principal First Violin at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she had the great fortune to work with world class singers and renowned conductors including Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Carlos Kleiber and Bernard Haitink, amongst many others. Since becoming a freelance player she has performed in concert halls around the world, as well as in studios and theatres in London’s West End. She currently works freelance for the BBC Symphony Orchestra – an association which has developed her interest in commissioning and promoting new and accessible music for young people and amateurs. Teaching has always featured in her portfolio, and she regularly coaches all ages and abilities from beginner to postgraduate, including teacher training. This informed her many years as an examiner for Trinity College, London, for whom she travelled widely, and now as a festival adjudicator. She sits on the council of the European String Teachers Association (ESTA) and spent six years as a trustee for the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).
