Maria Sławek performs both solo and in chamber settings. A teacher and curator, she is a prime mover behind many artistic events, a co-founder and president of the Mieczysław Weinberg Institute, and a PhD holder in Arts. Born and raised in Gdańsk, she studied in Kraków, resides in Warsaw, and teaches and works in Warsaw and Kraków. She performs on large philharmonic stages as well as in small courtyards, bookstores, and art studios. Aside from playing the violin, Maria researches the history of Jewish music as a scholar associated with POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Jewish Historical Institute. Since 2011, she has been playing, studying, recording, and promoting the works of Mieczysław Weinberg. Following Weinberg’s sonatas recorded with Piotr Różański (CD Accord, 2015) and the album Rejoice with Marcin Zdunik (CD Accord, 2019), TIKTIN is her third solo album. Maria Sławek was an artist-in-residence at the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków (2017/2018), a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and of the City of Warsaw. She teaches students at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków and the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She has also initiated a series of micro-concerts in the spaces of Warsaw’s historic artists’ studios. Maria plays a R.& M. Millant violin (Paris, 1961).
