Biography

Ece Canlı is a Turkey-born and Portugal-based vocalist, composer and artist whose music combines natural with artificial, carnal with ethereal, and past with future. In her compositions and performances, she uses extended vocal techniques and extralinguistic expressions as her main tools, by occasionally adding on synths and other (wind, string, percussion, etc.) instruments as sonic prostheses. Her works mostly focus on the themes surrounding historically demonised bodies, counterfactual narrativity and mental delinking. Over the last decade, she has been part of various music projects and releases some of which include LIVE LOW, NOOITO (a duo with the harpist Angélica V. Salvi) and COBRA'CORAL (a vocal trio with Catarina Miranda and Clélia Colonna). She has also been performing and improvising as a soloist, meanwhile creating soundtracks and soundscapes for other artists' staged and filmed works. In November 2020, Ece's solo debut VOX FLORA, VOX FAUNA was released from Lovers&Lollypops. Combining a multiplicity of styles from ancient threnodies to improvised experimental music with a singular narrative, the album aims to evoke and crystallise the embodiment of the human-animal-nature, as a mediation between the earthly and the celestial. The plasticity of human voice, enhanced by the artifice of various registers, pulses, resonances and dissonances, is to commemorate our bestial and vegetal origins towards a psychic metamorphosis for relinking.
