Biography

Tara Moneka is a singer from Baghdad, Iraq, who sings in Arabic, English, Urdu, Spanish, Moroccan, African, Turkish, and more. Also Jazz, Rock, and afrobeat. She has an all-women band called "Dijlah,"––which means the river Tigris in Iraq–– that features professional multicultural musicians who center their message around women's rights! Tara grew up immersed in a Sufi family and became a well-known singer at age 13 after participating in regional television singing programmes in Iraq and working with The Iraqi Children's culture house in Baghdad. Tara now lives in Toronto where she collaborates regularly with many institutions, organizations and collectives including the Aga Khan Museum, Koerner Hall, Fabcollab’s "Women in a song," Uma Nota Culture, Moskitto Bar, MixTO, Moneka Arabic Jazz, Lula Lounge, The Opera House, Jamii Festival, Lemon Bucket Orchestra, and more. Tara's goal is to share her energy through her music and bring diverse people together for transformational experiences.
