Folk baroque chamber ensemble based in Oslo that brings to light songs of 17th century Norway. Two early musicians (Cathrine and Ulrik) and two folk musicians (Øyonn and Vegar), two singers and two instrumentalists – and two layers of transmission: Cathrine sings the tunes as they are notated in written baroque sources, Øyonn sings the tunes as they are transmitted through folk tradition. Ulrik and Vegar play with both. Characteristic of Barokk Boreal's presentations of the songs is that they contain both folk tune(s) and written baroque tune(s), sometimes in close alternation, as in Samuel Bruuns Juleode, sometimes simultaneously, as in the 3rd and 4th strophe of Engelbretsdatters Julesang. Exceptions are Iver Brinchs Julevise, where we only have the folk tune, and Ingeborg Gryttens Juledikt, where we only have the baroque melody. Note that 17th-century Northern Europe, specifically the Germanic language area, saw a transition in poetic rhythm and scansion into metres of set numbers of syllables, and efforts of varying success to distribute accents in set patterns. Add to this the interplay and clatter between dance tunes and lyrics, and we get an interesting, diverse range of rhythm in lyrics and songs, which Barokk Boreal loves to highlight.
