Auckland-based but Raglan-raised NZ artist Anna Coddington is one of NZ's most acclaimed songwriters. Her funk filled new album is Te Whakamiha, a bilingual body of work in te reo Māori & English. Her album Beams saw her working with indie-pop sensations Lips and creating a world which featured melodic and tasteful instrumentation, succinct arrangements, and ruthless self-expression. The album saw a collection of songs which dive deep into the personal to draw out the universal, taking inspiration from the likes of Julia Jacklin, Phoebe Bridgers & Clairo. A mother in a male-dominated industry, a Māori in a Pākeha world- she examines themes of identity, whakapapa, and self-acceptance through an urban Māori lense. With a broad musical palette and skill set, the last several years have seen Coddington write and produce for other artists, score and music supervise a TV drama, perform with large scale productions and orchestras, release music with electronic side project Clicks and more.
