Biography

b. Keith Sterling-Mcleod, January 1952, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Sterling comes from a musical family and his older brothers have all been involved in the Jamaican recording industry. Lester played alto saxophone in the Skatalites, Roy was a trumpeter with Lynn Tait And The Jets and Gladstone also played in the horn section. Keith Sterling’s supporting role led to work on the hotel circuit along Jamaica’s north coast and his eventual signing to Boris Gardiner’s Happening band. He began working as a freelance musician, playing keyboards for Inner Circle, Lloyd Parks’ We The People and Jimmy Cliff’s Oneness. As a session musician Sterling spent the mid-70s extending his accomplished keyboard skills on a number of hits, notably for Bob Marley And The Wailers, which proved a revelation even to him, as he had previously reported that he had never worked with Marley. He was, however, credited on the significant Songs Of Freedom compilation, and surmised that he may have provided overdubs. By the late 70s Sterling joined Word Sound And Power alongside Sly And Robbie, playing on every Peter Tosh album from Bush Doctor through to the definitive compilation. In 1984 Sterling began working at the Harry J. studio as an in-house producer, although little of his work from this period has surfaced. In 1988 the second version of Word Sound And Power, aka the Soul Syndicate band, was re-formed to play at a Peter Tosh tribute concert in Burbank, California, USA. The group supported Andrew Tosh, which led to a world tour and a session for the release of Make Place For The Youth. Sterling continues to be involved in session work, having played keyboards for most of the top names in reggae.
