Biography

Rudy Love & the Love Family were a sibling group headed by older brother Rudy. Over the years, non-siblings performed under the name, but Rudy remained the driving force; Love Family blood members are Bob, Gerald, Peggy, Denise, and Shirley. Rudy was born September 15, 1948, in Oklahoma and the family moved to Wichita, KS; it was a large brood as Rudy has 14 brothers and sisters. He developed a love for singing and performing from his gospel singing/musician father, Robert, and went from there. A touring singer, Robert crisscrossed the country as a performing musician with gospel and R&B artists. Rudy, the eldest son, became the man of the house while dad was away playing. Through his father, Rudy met many of the top names in music when they passed through Wichita. He formed his first group in grade school and went through many others before settling on Rudy Love & the Love Family in college. The group performed locally, but didn't record since Wichita wasn't and isn't exactly a music mecca. In fact, they didn't record much at all, their discography is miniscule mostly listing only two singles: "Housewife Blues" b/w "Does Your Mama Know" and "Ain't Nothing Spooky," recorded in 1975 and 1976, respectively, on Calla Records, as well as an album, entitled This Song Is for You, which is out-of-print. But before Calla, they cut Rudy Love for ATV/Pye Records, which is harder to find than the Calla album. At Calla, Rudy wrote the best song on the Persuaders' All About Love album, "Hey Sister, I'm Your Brother," a tense drama. He issued two more singles, "Hungry Children" and "Then I Found You," on his Earthbound label. He became a demo vocalist for Motown West and South, working under producers Clayton Ivey and Terry Woodford. He later did ten years with Sly Stone (as a bandleader and manager) but eventually returned home to Wichita where his mother runs Mama Love's, a popular soul food restaurant. He performs in events and functions in the area, including the annual A Family Affair Celebration, and has expanded his horizons to writing words and lyrics for plays, i.e. Joyce Markley's Apartment of Many Windows, an original homegrown musical about an unwanted young boy. He also helped with the production of Children of Eden, another local play. ~ Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
