Born in Worcester Massachusetts in 1962 to two university students, Lonnie Supnick and Judith Ephron. His mother Judith had the artistic vein. Niece of Henry Ephron and Phoebe Wolkind Ephron who were American playwrights, screenwriters and film producers in the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s. Judith’s cousin’s, daughters of Henry and Phoebe, also became successful writers themselves, the most famous being Nora Ephron. In Michael’s home there was much music, including jazz. In the early 1960’s Michael’s mother played the guitar and sang and hung out with artists of the Boston folk music scene including the likes of Jim Kweskin, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur, and Bob Dylan. Michael moved with the family to Kalamazoo, Michigan when he was ten years old. At age eleven, Michael started studying the trombone during the fifth year of elementary school and played in the school band. He played trombone all the way through high school, occasionally working in theater orchestras doing musicals. Though under age, at seventeen he started attending his first jam sessions and concerts with local jazz musicians. Michael then attended the University of Indiana for one year, only to transfer to the Berklee College of Music where he graduated in 1984. After graduating from Berklee, Michael moved to Rome, Italy in 1985 where he currently lives with his wife, son, and daughter along with their two dogs.
