Y.O.G.A (You’re Only Great Always) is more than just music. The solo project from Reuben Styles of Peking Duk packs songs that span everything from psychedelic and disco to country and western – think Tame Impala with a little yee-haw thrown in for good measure. But at their core is a message about the importance of working through the bad and celebrating the good. The project was born in late 2020 because Styles had a vision. He wanted to use his music and public platform to encourage open and inspiring conversations about mental health — a topic of great personal significance to him. At age 17, Styles lost one of his best friends to suicide, a tragedy he’s spent half of his life trying to make sense of. Online, Styles uses his social media to spread #mentalhealthstories, a series where Australians like former Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott and TV presenter Brooke Boney have shared the story of how they got through their own tough times. And in song, Y.O.G.A. tackles topics like identity, self-image, acceptance and the balance of light and dark. The music has hit the right note, already clocking up well over a million streams on the early EPs and bringing Y.O.G.A to the stage of festivals like Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival. Wherever Y.O.G.A goes from here, the truths that underpins it all will stay the same: there is beauty in the broken parts, no good without the bad, and so many reasons to keep going.
