Martin Nodeland is a Norwegian guitarist, composer and arranger whose first recording as leader, Debut (2019), was a confident and intricate neo-bop quintet playing mainly originals and a couple of standards – a lovely album that to my ears sounded like how Bobby Watson and John Abercrombie might have sounded playing together with a piano trio. Only a year later and with Origins (2020) he’s released an ambitious album of originals performed by an eleven-piece ensemble: two guitarists, trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, drums and string quartet. - Julian Maynard-Smith (LondonJazzNews) Nodeland has worked with various established artists such as Will Vinson, Atle Nymo, Tore Brunborg and Roberto Bonati as well as younger talents like Alexander Hoholm, Simen Kiil Halvorsen and Rastko Obradović. "Already during the first track, Ballard, he reveals himself as a competent composer, and a guitarist with flair, harmonic understanding and technique that supplements his compositions and musical ideas exquisitely” - Petter Wettre ... an as impressive and mature debut you could imagine. - Tor Hammerø (Nettavisen) ... Nodeland himself, somewhere in his twenties, sounds killing. There is a wonderful flow in his playing, it's creative and technically brilliant. - Espen Løkeland Stai (Dagsavisen) "In short, Origins is a beautiful album, and Martin Nodeland, born in 1993, is a performer to watch." - Julian Maynard-Smith (LondonJazzNews)
