Voices in three-part harmony rise and dive, buoyed by malleted percussion and electric guitar, steel string acoustic, and low tones of flatwound bass. This is JKLOL, the acronym and the band of songwriters Jefferson Hamer, Kristin Andreassen, Lauren Balthrop, and Lawson White. There might be a touch of irony in the childlike moniker, with Kristin having fronted legendary old-time group Uncle Earl, Jefferson winning a BBC2 award for his duo with Anais Mitchell, and Lawson producing records for legends like Gil-Scott Heron. Lauren helms the outfit with her anything-is-possible singing voice. JKLOL, the group’s self-titled debut, was recorded live during a week of late night sessions in an East Nashville garage. With vocal tones melting like warm ice cream and new songs penned by all four members, this is folk-pop in the classic sense, like Fleetwood Mac or Carly and James, before everything went chaste, sober, and surrendered to digital. JKLOL plans to release their debut album in early 2021. xo JKLOL
