Biography

Boasting a cross-continental career in music that spans over three decades and multifarious roles, Japanese Jazz Pianist, improvisor, composer Aya Sekine commands a reputation for being one of Asia’s most illustrious Jazz pianists/composers and international profiles. Known for her distinctive style of expression that’s at once soulful, dynamic and relentlessly unique to diverse, she has firmly established herself as a fervent advocate of America's indigenous art form, Jazz - within the region, lending herself fully and championing the genre in everything she does – be it through unforgettable performances across South East Asia, Japan and the rest of the world; or tireless grassroots movements to foster a vibrant community. Born in Osaka, Japan and raised between her hometown and Singapore, Aya’s life has always revolved around music. Following her graduation from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, a thirst for adventure left unquenched and the allure of tapping into the metropolis that the world regarded as the epicentre of Jazz saw Aya remain in New York City, albeit performing and finding success in the vibrant and experimental underground music scene, having performed regularly at legendary venues such as CBGB's, Continental and The Knitting Factory in particular. A decade into her life in the big apple, Aya accepted an invitation to be the resident pianist of legendary Jazz @ Southbridge back in Singapore and the rest is history.
