Biography

About Gary DeBerry, Sr. A bassist composer from Jamaica Queens, NY, Gary plays 4-, 5- and 6-string and upright bass. He also plays piano and sings. Gary got his first professional experience in the early 70’s with Creative Funk, a group he established. With this group he composed many songs but the two that were local radio station hits were “ Ready Made Family” and “Moving World”. Gary’s brother, Deek DeBerry, founded the record label Creative Funk Enterprises where Gary produced and wrote for several groups and artists. Gary did later go out on the road to perform with jazz greats such as flutist Bobbi Humphrey, drummer Norman Connors and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. After coming off the road, he played with several NY club date agencies. From his many compositions, Gary started a publishing company, Galanda Music Publishing, LLC. His bass playing and compositions reflect the many styles of music he has encountered. Now, as a bandleader, he looks forward to performing his compositions from jazz, blues, funk, gospel, R&B, and fusion. He absolutely has a passion for the bass. Gary gives God the glory!
