Markus Howell is a saxophonist, composer and educator from Deerfield Beach, Florida, now living in New York City. Howell is a member of the Grammy Award-winning Count Basie Orchestra and tours with international singer and recording artist Michael Bublé. Howell's music is characterized by its integrity, joy, love, spirituality, and deep roots of soul, as exemplified in his latest album, "Chosen Path" (Posi-Tone 2024). The band accompanying him on this album consists of experienced musicians such as Art Hirahara, Boris Kozlov, and Rudy Royston. Howell’s debut album as a leader is titled "Get Right!" (Posi-Tone 2019), and features an impressive lineup of musicians including Michael Dease, Joe Magnarelli, Art Hirahara, Rodney Whitaker, and Luther Allison. His career has been on a steady rise, and he has had the privilege of performing and recording with esteemed artists such as Christian McBride, Rodney Whitaker, Mark Whitfield, Carmen Bradford, Wycliffe Gordon, Billie Eilish, Dianne Reeves, Bobby Rush, and Karen Clark Sheard. Howell's performances have taken him to renowned festivals and venues including Madison Square Garden, John F. Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, The Hollywood Bowl, The Apollo Theater, Yoshi's Jazz Club (Oakland, CA), Blue Note Tokyo, Detroit Jazz Festival, and Birdland Jazz Club (New York City). He holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University.
