Biography

As a member of professional small musical ensembles, d'Estree was an oboist, composer and choreographer. The majority of his compositions were dances though he did not often use the normative chanson form. Four books of "danseries" were written by d'Estree and include about 120 different branles in variation. Some of his works are extant thanks to the reprinting by Phalese. Portions of other works are extant: either the lowest part alone which only indicates harmonic bass lines with strong I, IV, V harmonics, or both the highest and lowest parts which reflect qualitative works. The four books of dances composed by d'Estree convey the reality of the dance practices found in France during the middle to late 16th century. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
